Halftone - Any photographic image made ready to print by reducing the image to dots through screening.
Halftone Cell - A matrix of available imagesetter spots, any number of which may be exposed to simulate halftone dots of different percentages.
Halftone Dot - A process of representing a continuous tone image such as a photograph by converting each area into a screened pattern of black-and-white or color dots of various sizes.
Halo - A faint outline of the printed image.
Hard Dot - A dot in a halftone screen that has smooth, crisp edges.
Hardware - Computers, printers, monitors and other devices.
Hanging Punctuation - Punctuation that is set outside the line length to achieve optical alignment.
Header - The sign projecting above a display.
Hickie - Printing term for a defect or spot in a solid area caused by particle debris (often appearing as specks of ink surrounded by a white halo). Also refers to a burr or defect on the printing plate or engraving.
High-Res Scan - A high-resolution scan generally stored on a file server and replaces an FPO/low-res scan at the time of imaging. High-resolution scans require a large amount of storage space and RAM. This process allows the user to size and place a low-resolution version of the image, which is smaller and easier to work with.
Holography - Laser-generated photographic reproduction of three-dimensional art on a flat plate.
Horizontal Scale - The proportion between the height and width of type. Type may be horizontally scaled in page layout and illustration applications.
Hot Foil Stamp - Decorative application of metallic or colored leaf to a portfolio or book.
Hue - The distinguishing characteristics of any given color.
