GLOSSARY OF TERMS

Icon - An image on the screen, usually representing an item such as a file, document, disk or application that you can select and open.

Identity - The characteristics determining what a person or thing is.

Ignore Links - An instruction to disregard any graphic elements that may be missing from a page layout. A file may be imaged with its links ignored if halftones or line shots are to be stripped in manually.

Image - The live area of a file printed to a printer or previewed on screen.

Image Areas - The area of the printing plate which transfers ink to the substrate. Also the correlating area of the receiving surface.

Image - The general impression of an organization, person or product held by the public.

Image Manipulation - Changes or corrections made to scanned images, including sizing to make larger or smaller, deletion of portions of the image, drop shadows, combining images, masking, etc.

Impression - The image transferred from the printing plate to the substrate. Also the adjustment required to affect the above transfer.

Impression Cylinder - Roller or cylinder that backs up and supports the web at the point of impression.

Impressions - The number of times a printing plate transfers ink to paper. Also refers to the number of instances an advertisement is exposed to a specific group of people.

In-and-Out Promotion - A promotion of short duration designed to move a product quickly.

Incremental Sales - Additional sales traced to the effect of a promotion.

In-house - A production service that a firm provides by using its own staff and equipment.

Injection Molding - A molding technique that injects liquefied material into a mold cavity and forms a positive mold.

In-line Display - A POS display that is set up within the line of retail shelving.

In-line Press - A multicolor press in which the color stations are mounted horizontally in a line.

In-pack - Premium, coupon, or other offer placed in a product package.

Instant Coupon - Coupons designed to be removed from packaging and used immediately in the store.

Ink Holdout - Characteristic of paper that prevents it from absorbing ink, thus allowing ink to dry on the surface of the paper.

Interactive Display - A display requiring consumer participation in the selling process by supplying information about needs and preferences through the use of a computer keyboard or touch screen. The computer processes consumer inputs and makes a buying recommendation.

Invoice - A bill for specific product or service, and only one invoice is issued. You should pay from invoices, never statements. Unpaid invoices will appear on monthly statements, and interest may be charged against the unpaid balance. If you have a dispute over an invoice, you should pay immediately any portion not in dispute. Any dispute should be called to the seller’s attention, prior to the invoice becoming past-due.

Island Display - A stand-alone retail display that can be shopped from 360 degrees.

Italic - Letterform that slants to the right and looks like this (italic).
