GLOSSARY OF TERMS

Recycled Medium - Paperboard used in forming the fluted portion of corrugated board made from recycled fiber such as old corrugated cartons.

Reflective Art - Art that must be photographed by the light reflected from its surface.

Register - Printing term for the correct positioning of each color run so that the final product is in register.

Rendering - The drawing of any product, display, or packaging piece.

Retouching - Altering a photo print or negative through a graphic process such as air brushing.

Reverse - Printing term for the process of dropping an image out of the color.

RFP - A “Request for Proposal.” This is usually a form sent to suppliers inviting them to submit a proposal on a specific project. Be sure to note on your RFP that it is not a purchase order. Make sure your specifications and project goals are clear. Don’t use ambiguous language.

Ring Crush - The amount of force required to crush a narrow piece of paperboard inserted into a holder with a circular groove.

Roller Stripping - Failure of the ink to adhere to the rollers of the press.

Roman - All the type sizes and type styles of a particular typeface.

Rotogravure - Printing term for the technique of using an etched, or engraved, copper cylinder for image transfer.

Rough Sketch - A rough drawing of a design that is later developed into artwork.

RSC - Regular slotted carton. Usually a corrugated shipping carton designed to fold up and around the product to be packed and shipped.
